Being fat and brightly colored gives drakes a decided advantage over smaller and less conspicuous males. In many duck species, the male ducks have more colorful feathers and bills. Lower back, rump and uppertail coverts are black. Because mallards are so widespread, they often crossbreed with other duck species, including escaped domestic ducks.
